That is—if she doesn’t go to jail for murder first!
In a small suburb outside of Chicago, in a guard-gated community where every morning both men and dogs went out to do their business, forty year old Ellie Briotti snuck out her back door, clutching her cell phone in one hand and a small flashlight in the other.
“God, we need to have a chat,” Ellie announced, scowling up at the churning heavens as she flipped on her flashlight. “If You were going to turn my life into a freakin’ three-ring circus, did You have to saddle me with the biggest Bozo under the Big Top?
“You know, a woman’s life would be a lot easier if she could just rent a husband by the hour like...bowling shoes, instead of this ‘till death do us part’ crap,” she grumbled. “I mean think about it, a woman marries a man she thinks is a prince and twenty years later wakes up to find her prince has turned into a prick, and the only way out You’ve given her is death?” Ellie shook her head. “That can’t be right,” she added dismally, sidestepping the motion sensors that would set off the house’s elaborate alarm system.
“Let’s face it, You haven’t exactly been ‘growing Your business’ lately, know what I mean? I’m sure Your rules were mag back in the day. But now? Not so much. This ‘till death do us part’ just isn’t working. Unless of course that means I can kill my lying, cheating husband.”
Lightning flashed, and thunder exploded right over her head, loud enough to make her ears ring and the ground tremble. Startled, Ellie ducked, covering her ears as she stumbled backward, nearly losing her balance.
“Hey! Hey! You don’t have to get cranky. I was just...checking my options.” The sky began to sizzle, then turned an electrified white for a moment, spreading across the sky like someone had spilled a glass of high voltage milk.
Ellie swore, slapping both hands over her eyes, fearing she might be blinded if she didn’t. Wind gusted from out of nowhere, howling like a freight train, and knocked her back a couple of steps.
Struggling to stay upright and hold onto her bathrobe at the same time, Ellie braced herself against the pummeling wind, trying to catch her breath. Thunder erupted, making the ground feel like it was buckling under her.
“Will You stop this?” she demanded, all but yelling to be heard over the roaring thunder. Covering her head with her arms, Ellie ran toward the patio, losing one of her slippers along the way.
“Shit! Shit! Double shit!”
Reaching the safety of the covered patio, she placed a hand on her racing heart and took a deep breath.
“Okay, okay, so ‘till death do us part’ doesn’t mean I can kill Nicky. I get it, but with the state of the world, I figured it might be worth a shot,” she added, limping around in a circle, searching the dark ground for her missing slipper.
